Kea
The island
Kea
Kea is one of the northernmost islands of the Cyclades, known for its rugged landscapes, ancient paths and deep connection to history.
Despite its proximity to Athens, the island has preserved a quieter rhythm and a strong sense of authenticity.
An Island Shaped by Nature
Kea’s coastline is marked by steep cliffs, sheltered bays and clear waters, while the interior reveals olive groves, stone terraces and extensive oak forests — among the few remaining royal oak forests in the Aegean, now protected for their ecological value.
This contrast between land and sea gives the island its distinctive character, inviting exploration beyond the shoreline.
A Long and Layered History
According to Greek mythology, the island takes its name from Keos, the son of Apollo and leader of the Lokrians. In earlier times, Kea was known as Hydroussa, a reference to the abundance of natural springs found across the island.
Archaeological evidence shows that Kea has been inhabited since the Late Neolithic period and played an important cultural role during the Bronze Age. The island participated in the Persian Wars and later became a member of the Athenian Alliance.
During the Ottoman occupation, known locally as the period of Tzia, Kea remained an active maritime and commercial hub. Following its liberation in 1821, the island developed a strong industrial presence, particularly in enamel, metal and woodworking.
